The most common visible asphalt problems are age, alligator cracking, raveling and potholes. Asphalt by nature will break down. Water, heavy loads and time all affect the appearance of asphalt. It becomes dry, cracked, and crumbly.Polyurethane materials are the best asphalt repair products to restore asphalt damage. As asphalt ages and oxidizes, it becomes more gray. This chemical changes makes the asphalt more brittle and subject to cracking. It is best to catch the cracks while they are still hairline cracks. If not caught in time, hairline cracks grow and increase turning into alligator cracking. This alligatoring can be stopped with the right asphalt crack repair. The next step in the process of degradation is raveling. When the binder in asphalt begins to wash away, the surface becomes deeply pitted. Asphalt repair at this point is essential. If not properly fixed, the next stage may have to be to remove and replace the damaged asphalt.Cracks can erode, allowing water into the sub-base and weakening the foundation of the road or driveway. More water enters the asphalt and vehicles compress the damaged asphalt and mud will pump up through the cracks. This is the last stage of failure as the asphalt breaks into small pieces and starts to crumble away, forming a pothole.Repairing Hairline CracksSealing smaller asphalt cracks can be done simply using Concrete Welder for asphalt crack repair, available in a cartridge format. Make sure the crack is clean and free of moisture. Use a broom or blower to clean out any loose materials. Open cartridge and squeeze Concrete Welder directly into the crack. Use a scraper or straight-edge to smooth the material out. Wipe up any excess material and allow to dry for 30 minutes. Now the crack is filled and ready for use.
